We developed this policy to help private aircraft owners who might be looking to get their initial pilot’s license or the licensed aircraft owner that hasn’t flown in a while and wants to take their friends and family up for a flight looking for a refresher check flight. Our goal is to share the love of aviation with others with the plan for everyone to come home safely.
To conduct initial training (PPL or Rec) on a privately owned aircraft the student must be the registered owner or immediate family to the registered owner. Fractional membership and/or temporary registrations do not meet the CARS definition of registered owner. “Owner, in respect of an aircraft or remotely piloted aircraft system, means the person who has legal custody and control of the aircraft or system;” Aircraft provided by the student to be at arm’s length of the school or instructor, otherwise would require to be added to the operating certificate with a proper lease agreement, commercially maintained under the General Lee Aviation MSA and insured under our company policy.
Licensed Pilots looking to do recurrent training or those wanting to get a type rating (float, ski, tailwheel) in an aircraft that GLA does not operate can utilize privately owned aircraft providing they meet the criteria listed below.
GLA management to review all maintenance records of the plane to assure the aircraft is within annual, regular manufacture maintenance inspections and all Transport Canada AD’s have been complied with. No owner-maintained or Homebuilt Aircraft permitted.
CARS 405.23 No person shall operate a training aircraft unless the aircraft meets the personnel licensing standards. CARS 406.33 No flight training unit shall operate an aeroplane or a helicopter unless each front seat, or each seat occupied by a trainee or flight instructor, is equipped with a safety belt that includes a shoulder harness. Shoulder Harness, dual flight controls and operational hobbs meter are required equipment for flight training under this policy.
Operational control system must be in place, including daily flight log flight itineraries with the proper authorizations for all flights. Students are not permitted to fly solo to and from their home airport/farm outside of the operational control to ensure (No carrying of passengers or flying into marginal weather). This would void both the private and GLA insurance policies. Logbooks with hobbs meter review carried out prior to each flight and if student found to be flying outside of GLA operational control, will be terminated from further flight training with GLA.
Spin capable and certified aircraft are required to teach spins (PPL) and for that section of the CPL flight test. Training in a non-spinnable aircraft for other lessons is permitted and flight test can be done in two flights utilizing the spin capable aircraft for that section of the flight test.
405.22 No person shall conduct flight training in an aircraft unless the person is familiar with the flight characteristics, operating limitations and operational performance data specified in the aircraft flight manual or equivalent document. The student’s aircraft insurance may have higher limitations for pilot experience. In any case, a through check-out of the instructor by an experienced and qualified instructor in that particular type of aircraft is required to provide a minimum level of safety with a record kept on file at GLA.
Individual instructor is to be named on the private insurance policy for primary coverage, GLA commercial insurance policy will cover over and above the private policy to a limit of $5 million liability. GLA Instructors will also be covered under their WCB policy. A record of the instructor named on the policy is to be kept on file with GLA.
